In this episode of *The Problem Is You*, we’re getting real about something we’ve all been guilty of—falling for someone’s potential. You know, that dreamy version of them you create in your head, only to find yourself disappointed when reality doesn’t quite match up? Yeah, that.

Cait’s here to break down the difference between potential and possibility, and trust me, it’s a game-changer. And it’s time we stop getting those two mixed up.

We’re talking real talk about relationships, personal growth, and how to stop setting ourselves up for heartbreak by attaching to a version of someone that might never exist. Cait’s got your back with tips on how to support the people you care about without losing yourself in the process. This episode is like a loving nudge from your best friend to wake up and see things for what they really are.

Key Topics Discussed:

- Why potential and possibility aren’t the same thing (and why that matters!)

- The emotional rollercoaster of falling for potential

- How to love and support people for who they truly are

- Practical tips for keeping your relationships healthy and drama-free

- Focusing on real actions, not just pretty words

Quotes:

- "You can’t want something for someone more than they want it for themselves."

- "Potential is just a fancy word for desire; possibility is about what they’re actually doing."

- "Loving the possibility in people means cheering them on for who they really are, not who you wish they’d be."

Call to Action:

If you’re not already subscribed to *The Problem Is You*, what are you waiting for? Inspired by Episode 3 of "The Problem Is You" podcast, this framework is designed to help you identify and solve the root causes of your problems rather than just addressing their symptoms. By the end of this post, you will have a clear understanding of the Four-Part Problem Breakdown and practical exercises to implement it in your life starting. right. now!

The Overview:

The Four-Part Problem Breakdown consists of four components: Time, Space, Matter, and Purpose. These elements help you dissect and understand the underlying issues of absolutely ANY block you face.

12th House of Wild is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

1. **Time**: When the problem occurs.

2. **Space**: Where the problem happens.

3. **Matter**: What the problem creates.

4. **Purpose**: The gain from keeping the problem.

Why It Works:

This framework works because it forces you to look beyond the immediate symptoms of your issues and delve into their deeper causes. By breaking down a problem into these four components, you can gain clarity on what’s truly holding you back and take actionable steps to address it.

As I mentioned in the episode with the example of disorganization and being scatterbrained, we think we aren’t making progress on our goals because we are too disorganized. So when we feel this way we get tools to get organized like a planner. We use the planner for a week or two and then we fall off the wagon. Again, attributing even our inconsistency with the planner to being scatter-brained and disorganized, when in fact being disorganized and scatter-brained is only the symptom of a larger problem as to why you’re not accomplishing your goals and this is the exact framework you can use to figure out why.

Exercise: Applying the Four-Part Problem Breakdown:

Step 1: Identify the Problem (using my client’s example from the episode)

Start by clearly stating the problem you’re facing. For example, "I don’t have enough money to leave my job and pursue the work I love."

Step 2: Break Down the Problem

1. Time: When does this problem occur? I specifically asked the question, “You won’t ever have enough money to leave your job to pursue the work you love?”

 - She responded: "I don’t have enough money to leave my job within the next year."

2. Space: Where does this problem happen? In her original problem, we can determine that the problem lives inside of her finances.

 - She responded: "Specifically, I don’t have $100,000 in my savings."

3. Matter: What does this problem create? I specifically asked the question, “What would $100,000 in your savings create that currently doesn’t already exist without it?”

 - She responded: "Not having $100,000 in my savings creates a lack of safety, security, and stability."

4. Purpose: What is the gain from keeping this problem?

 - A synthesized version of her response: By not addressing this problem, I maintain a sense of familiarity and avoid the fear of the unknown. Additionally, there may be an underlying desire for someone to take care of me financially.

*Remember also if there is an alternative way to solve this problem based on the question: “Is there any other way you could imagine having (fill in the matter) safety, security, and stability that doesn’t include the $100,000 in your savings. Because that answer could also indicate an alternate solution that you may or may not want to solve for.

Step 3: Expand the Problem Statement

Combine the insights from the four components to create a detailed problem statement.

- Example: "I don’t have $100,000 in my savings to leave my job within the next year and still feel safe, secure, and stable to pursue the work I love. Unless I find a partner to help me."

Step 4: Identify Action Steps
